Hi! I’m Mrs. Hernandez, your friendly coffee obsessed-book nerd English teacher, fueled almost entirely by iced coffee or matcha or milk tea (whatever I am in the mood for). When I’m not teaching, you’ll probably catch me reading horror, American gothic, murder mystery, or a rom-com—because life’s all about balance. Don't get me wrong, I also love the cliche classic literature almost all English teachers love!
This is my fifth year teaching overall and each year has been here at CHHS! So, yes, I’m a proud Husky. I earned my B.A. in English Literature from CSU San Bernardino, where I discovered my love for literature and my teaching philosophy. Without this college experience, I do not believe I would be the teacher I am today. The professors and colleagues I have met all impacted my philosophy and way of thinking. I believe students should feel welcomed, encouraged to learn at their own pace, and free to express their ideas. Authors like Sandra Cisneros, Maya Angelou, bell hooks, Plato, and Allen Ginsberg shaped my approach, with bell hooks especially influencing my belief in building classroom communities where student voices matter. Fun Fact: bell hooks is the sole reason I am the teacher I am today.
I just finished my master’s in Learning Design and Technology at Arizona State University (go Sun Devils!), which means I can now officially say things like “pedagogical frameworks” in casual conversation without feeling too pretentious… probably. Regardless, the two years it took me to obtain this masters degree drained me entirely, but looking back, I would not change the experience. My love for technology bloomed as I learned all the secrets of tech in education—prepare for all the tech. This degree means more to me than just a simple paper, it is me paving the path for my family as I am the first person to ever get a masters.
Whether English is your favorite subject or your academic arch-nemesis, my goal is to make this class a place where you can grow, think deeply, and maybe even enjoy yourself along the way. Don't dim your light in my classroom! I welcome everyone and I cannot wait to tackle this new school year with you all.
